SEA LIFE Sydney’s Same-Sex Penguin Family To Live-Stream This Weekend
Gay penguin power couple, Sphen and Magic, along with their adopted hatchling Sphengic, will go live on World Penguin Day this weekend (Saturday, 25th April at 9am).
“Whether in attraction or via social media, we’re constantly inundated with questions about the Sphengic family,” says Tish Hannan, Penguin Department Supervisor.
“So we’re very excited to take Sphengic fans from all around the world behind the scenes in our Macquarie Island-inspired exhibit!”
The Facebook live-stream will showcase the entire penguin colony at SEA LIFE Sydney Aquarium before launching into a Q&A with the penguin zookeepers who will be ready to answer all your burning Sphengic questions. Be sure to follow their Facebook page and set your alarm for 9am this coming Saturday.
Sphen and Magic: A Love Story
Eighteen months ago, the zookeepers of SEA LIFE Sydney Aquarium stumbled upon a remarkable love affair. Two male Gentoo penguins named Sphen and Magic had developed a strong bond between each other. They simply became inseparable, eagerly spending so much time together.
With all this display of loyalty and love, the zookeepers decided to give the beautiful couple a foster egg to incubate. And after a few months of taking turns sitting on the egg, Sphengic was born!
Baby Sphengic became SEA LIFE Sydney’s first sub-Antarctic penguin chick since the colony first joined the Darling Harbour family in November 2016.
On top of that, the Sphengic family have also become international celebrities. They even made a special appearance in Season 2 of Netflix Original Series, Atypical.
And Sphengic is still going strong!
The Sphengic family, as well as all the other King and Gentoo penguins who call SEA LIFE Sydney Aquarium home, act as ambassadors for their species’, educating the public on the adversities that they face in the wild.
