Last week I wrote about how there are different levels of homophobia, and I believe the same can be said for transphobia as well. We seem to lump all intolerant people into one basket, which is extremely problematic. That's why we have a growing number of truly bigoted people emerging into mainstream society.

Are we really going to lump Dave Chappelle into the same basket as those who truly despise trans people?

And as much as J. K. Rowling's views on trans people are abhorrent, can we really compare her to those who actually bash up trans people?

I think a lot of people don't see the human behind the voice, we just see an opportunity to label someone as transphobic or homophobic or a bigot. And that doesn't solve anything. In fact, you're more likely to push them further into their bigotry than bring them out of it.

It's why we see growing Islamic State terrorists, because people don't see the difference between a dark faction of religion and your everyday, decent Muslim. Islamic State terrorists are the same as Westboro Baptist Church; they don't represent the true religion.
