20 Unapologetic Gay Anthems For Pride Month 2020
It’s nearly Pride Month in the United States, but how can you celebrate with all this self-isolating? By blasting gay anthems, of course!
Far too many lists of gay anthems are very broad in their selections. They tend to mix in songs that subtly allude to the queer cause. Or they’re simply just “camp” melodies.
Honestly, I’m a little fed up about it…
Gay anthems need to scream gay pride! So I’ve selected these sassy homosexual anthems that are unapologetic and raw.
Wave that rainbow flag and let’s glitter bomb this bitch!
Be warned: Some of these videos have explicit language, marked (E)
“OK2BGAY” by Tomboy
I’m still surprised that this didn’t become an anthem when it was released in 2006. “OK2BGAY” is just so camp and unapologetically queer. The perfect way to start this list!
“I Like Boys” by Todrick Hall (E)
Todrick Hall is the queen of sass and cares little for figurative eggshells. You may know him from his track Nails, Hair, Hips, Heels, which is another great queer anthem of his.
“Follow Your Arrow” by Kacey Musgrave
One YouTube commenter put it best: “Remember when Kacey Musgraves invented gay rights in the south!” It may not be outrageously sassy, but it gets the message across.
“Sissy That Walk” by Ru Paul
Ru Paul has done a lot for drag queens across the globe, bringing professional gender-bending to all sorts of screens. And with “Sissy That Walk”, she boasts a snappy message for gay pride.
“You Need To Calm Down” by Taylor Swift
The cameos in this number are just heaven, not to mention the careless attitude towards the haters. You’re not gonna change us, so what’s the use of whinging? You need to calm down, hun…
“Brave” by Sara Bareilles
Sarah Bareilles wrote this cute and catchy anthem for her gay friend who needed help with coming out. So while the message of “Brave” is broad, the true meaning behind it speaks volumes.
“Girls Like Girls” by Hayley Kiyoko
It may not beckon you out of your chair, but it’s strong meaning still delivers punches. In fact, Hayley Kiyoko has written a few lesbian anthems. Because girls like girls. Get over it.
“First Time He Kissed A Boy” by Kadie Elder
Nearly every gay man can relate to Kadie Elder’s tune. We’ve all had to be that teacher, showing the closeted their true colours. Because it almost always begins with a kiss…
“You Make Me Feel (Mighty Real)” by Sylvester
The song itself may not be expressly gay, but the singer behind it was. And that gives it the perfect meaning. Sadly, 10 years after releasing this song, Sylvester died of AIDS complications.
“I’m Coming Out” by Diana Ross
Nile Rodgers and Bernard Edwards wrote this song purely for Diana Ross. As Nile said: “We had written it because of her gay following.” And boy did she deliver a classic gay anthem!
“I Am What I Am” by Shirley Bassey
Gloria Gaynor did bring us the disco beat, but I believe Shirley Bassey belted out the true meaning of the song. Come on, rainbow kids, it’s time to come out of your closet!
“Take Your Mama” by Scissor Sisters
Many gay people will recognise this as their coming out song. And that’s exactly what it was intended for! More specifically, getting drunk with your mum at a gay club.
“Same Love” by Macklemore & Ryan Lewis feat. Mary Lambert
Macklemore is a straight ally, proven by the exceptional lyrics and insights that “Same Love” shares. And there’s even a lesbian video clip sung wholly by female vocalist Mary Lambert.
“On The Regular” by Shamir (E)
Shamir is a no-fucks-given singer who’s brought us this sassy queer anthem that celebrates the idea of being different. If generation Z needs a youthful gay tune, this is it!
“Pynk” by Janelle Monáe (E)
Pansexual pride for the win! Out and proud pansexual Janelle Monáe is not afraid to say that she likes pink things. Can you guess what pink things she’s talking about?
“Girls/Girls/Boys” by Panic! At The Disco
Let’s continue our pansexual pride with Brendon Urie, the one-man-band behind Panic! At The Disco. Sometimes gender isn’t an issue for some people. They like anyone who treats them nice.
“Crayons” by Cupcakke (E)
Let’s be honest, if we could choose our fag hag, it would be Cupcakke. She’s got a sassy attitude and she’s using it for the right reasons. Who cares who you love. Be you. Fuck the world!
“Bisexual Anthem” by Domo Wilson (XE)
(The ‘X’ is for extra explicit) Domo Wilson is explicitly bisexual. She likes it big, whether it’s boobs or bangers, and she is not afraid to say it. In fact, she prefers to rap it out!
“Born This Way” by Lady Gaga
Yes, I know, cliche… But I’m not apologizing. It’s a gay anthem, not just for the lyrics, but because Gaga sports a pink triangle at the beginning of this video. And if you don’t know the meaning of the pink triangle, then you need to learn. It’s part of your history as a homosexual!
“I Just Wanna F*cking Dance” by Alison Jiear (E)
What a way to finish off this list! “I Just Wanna Fucking Dance” has become an anthem for gay nightclubs across the world. It may not be explicitly gay, but it’s meaning is felt. “I don’t give a fuck no more if people think I am a whore.”
DANCE BITCHES!
